In 2025, this is quite a request. Interestingly, there’s also the fact that Hyll is incredibly photogenic. While touring the courtyard bedrooms—the most striking renovation on the property, showcasing an earthy color scheme unlike anything I’ve encountered in this area—I can’t resist pulling out my phone to capture a few images.

“Without getting overly poetic, there’s a sense of floating through the space,” Liam remarks when I mention my urge to sink into the incredibly cozy beds and chairs during the tour. “It’s all about cherishing the moment. The lighting in the courtyard bedrooms, for instance, isn’t overhead; it’s intimate, personal lighting that highlights those snug spots where one might relax with a book or a drink. It brings light to that moment in time, making you fully present.”
The courtyard bedrooms provide grounding, cocoon-like retreats, drenched in bold, deep colors. Youth collaborates with the Denmark-based brand St. Leo to use brown paint plaster, creating a tactile finish throughout these rooms and suites. “This resonates with the landscape, the rugged hills,” Ollie explains. “We’ve crafted the bathroom trays from stone materials. These rustic elements feel wonderful, and the way the light interacts with them is extraordinary. It has an almost primal quality.”
That’s an apt description of the spaces, one I wish I had coined myself. The courtyard bedrooms at Hyll possess a rawness that invites deep breaths and brings you back to the present. While that sensation is deeply rooted in the pastoral landscape, the design techniques employed have a more urban feel. Comparisons to Copenhagen design are natural, especially due to the Danish materials used, yet Youth prefers not to align too closely with their Scandinavian counterparts.
“Scandinavian design influences everyone in our field,” Ollie acknowledges. “However, we draw more from Belgian design. It’s really an Antwerp approach to use lighting to craft moments of drama, for instance. It’s a bit more raw. And of course, Manchester—where our studio is located—has a bit of that raw and unrefined quality.”
